Croatian city to upgrade district heating network

A tender has been opened for the modernization of a district heating network in the Croatian city of Rijeka.

Bids are invited for a scope of work including rehabilitation of the existing network and substations, construction of a new power plant, supply and installation of gas-fired heat-only and steam boilers, supply and installation of district cooling equipment, and provision of an energy management solution.

The €6.2 million ($7 million) project will be financed by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and will be overseen by Rijeka district heating company Energo.

According to the EBRD, the existing 16 km heat network serves around 10,000 customers. It was built in the 1970s and generates 104 MW from 14 heat-only boiler plants and a combined heat and power (CHP) system.

The bank said the existing system’s combustion losses have amounted to 9% of its fuel energy, while distribution losses stand at 21% of the heat generated due to the pipes’ poor thermal insulation.
