Heat Pumps in District Heating
Description
This study (2016) explores the ways in which heat pumps can be integrated into heat networks, to understand which types of scheme could be economically and environmentally beneficial in a UK context. The approach combines data collection from existing schemes across Europe with modelling of promising schemes for the UK. A wide range of existing schemes have been studied and the suitability of heat pump technology for new and existing network designs investigated. In conjunction, a simulation model of heat pumps in district heating has been developed and used to gain insight into the relative benefits of different types of network, heat pump technology and ancillary heating plant. The results are presented in this report in terms of the cost premium of each scheme compared to a conventional district heating network, the CO2 emissions reduction, and the cost of CO2 saved.
