Dublin city council has urged the government to fund district heating as part of its planned national subsidy scheme for renewable heating, which begins next year.

In countries such as Sweden and Denmark, heating is mostly a centralised service that is distributed to homes and commercial buildings through a local grid, rather than each household having its own gas or oil boiler.

In Copenhagen, for example, “waste” heat from electricity generation is piped into homes, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
