(RR/ADW) The new Ban de Gasperich district of Luxembourg City slowly rises from what was once fields and farmland.

The new buildings will require a lot of heating and electricity, which will be supplied by the ECCO building located on Avenue F.W. Raiffeisen. However, the new district will not be the only customer.

“Good things come to those who wait,” said Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer on Tuesday at the inauguration of the ECCO building in Gasperich.

She isn’t wrong, as the heating centre took a massive 13 years from initial discussions to commissioning. And yet all the cables and pipes are still not connected.

In the striking building on Boulevard Raiffeisen is the district heating centre of Luxembourg City, operated by Lux-Energy, and a transformer station of the company Creo. All new buildings to be built in the Ban de Gasperich will be connected to this district heating network.

Heat generated by an incinerator at Sidor in Leudelange will be destined for the Ban de Gasperich. This means that not only electricity is generated by the Leudelange plant, but the remaining heat will also be used sensibly.

The heat will pass by headquarters located at the roundabout in Gasperich that currently holds gas boilers. These will be used only at peak times when demand is high or maintenance is required in Leudelange.

Around 80 to 85% of heating demand on the Ban de Gasperich and Cloche d’Or industrial zone, will be supplied from Leudelange. The remaining 15 to 20% will be produced in the district’s heating centre by gas boilers. By the end of 2018 all supply pipes should be laid.

At the Creos transformer station, power will be converted and supplied to Ban de Gasperich buildings as well as to the surrounding neighbourhoods of the capital.

The eco-friendly method of heating buildings at Ban de Gasperich via heat from the incinerator in Leudelange constitutes a new milestone for Luxembourg.
