CELSIUS Cities pledge to show leadership in bringing sustainable heat and cold to the heart of our cities

The question of sustainable heating and cooling supply to cities is of fundamental importance to Europe’s wider ambition to carry out a transition to a low carbon economy by 2050. The Deputy Mayors and city representatives at the CELSIUS Summit underlined that their local energy transition strategies explicitly address the decarbonistaion of heating and cooling. And cities are willing to show leadership in this area!

On behalf of the 72 CELSIUS cities, Ulf Kamne, Deputy Mayor of Gothenburg, signed and pledged to adhere to the Call for Action “Bringing Sustainable Heat and Cold to the Heart of Our Cities!”. During the CELSIUS Summit 2018 on 21 November in Brussels, the Call for Action was handed over to Hans van Steen, the Acting Director of the Directorate Renewables, Research and Innovation, Energy Efficiency at the European Commission.

The Call for Action lays out the basic convictions that unite the 72 CELSIUS cities:

1. Sustainable heating and cooling must be a key feature of any serious plans for the energy transition
2. Cities must lead
3. Solutions already exist
4. Bottom up must meet top down
