Parliament raises the stakes for higher ambition on the EED review

Today, in its report on the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive (2015/2232(INI)), the European Parliament reiterated its call for a 40% energy efficiency target for 2030, in a move which will tap the much needed economic benefits of the energy transition and facilitate climate action in line with the Paris agreement. The Parliament also challenges the Commission’s impact assessment of 2030 target levels, which misses a societal perspective and grossly exaggerates costs of energy efficiency investments.

“The European Parliament recognises the importance of the Energy Efficiency Directive as the legislative framework for energy efficiency in the EU, and has upped its expectations for the extension of the Directive and the ambition for 2030”, said Stefan Scheuer, Secretary General of The Coalition for Energy Savings. “The question is not only whether the Commission includes a 40% target in its assessment, but whether it does it applying a societal perspective, as requested by the Parliament”.
