The Steering Committee of the European Technology and Innovation Platform on Renewable Heating & Cooling (RHC-ETIP) has selected Heat Roadmap Europe 4 (HRE4) as most innovative project in the technology category of hybrid systems. The call for innovation projects, launched last month, focused on publicly or privately funded innovative projects having already reached a relatively advanced phase and able to present concrete achievements.

The technology areas featured were: biomass, district Heating and cooling, geothermal, heat pumps, solar thermal, thermal energy storage, and last but not least hybrid systems. The HRE4 use of a holistic and inclusive analysis, by combining the expertise of different sectors in four models to accurately understand and quantify the impacts of energy efficiency and renewables in the 14 EU member states made the project stand out in the latter category.

Heat Roadmap Europe has concluded that energy efficiency in the heating sector, which primarily includes heat savings in buildings, district heating in urban areas, and heat pumps and solar thermal in rural areas, will result in a cheaper, more local, and far more renewable heating and cooling sector in the future. Key to the project is the combination of mapping and modelling, in order to be able to understand not just the system effects of energy efficiency but also the spatial dimension.

As its prize, Heat Roadmap Europe has won a feature presentation during the event “Innovation in the Renewable Heating and Cooling sector” at EUSEW, which will take place on 21st June 2017 from 16.00 to 17.30 at the Résidence Palace in Brussels. The session will highlight innovative projects in the renewable heating and cooling sector, with a view to discuss the conditions to support innovations in the renewable heating and cooling (RHC) sector and to highlighting research priorities to be addressed in the future.
