GrowSmarterSince December 2015 Open District Heating is part of EU project GrowSmarter with purpose to find and develop new sustainable growth areas in European cities. Early on it was clear that Open District Heating is one of the sustainable solutions that will be demonstrated within GrowSmarter, an important solution in the future sustainable city.

GrowSmarter vision is to transforming cities for a smart, sustainable Europe. This will be possible by implementing 12 ‘smart solutions’, solutions designed to meet the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social and environmental concerns. GrowSmarter brings together cities and industry to integrate and demonstrate solutions in energy, infrastructure and transport, to provide other cities with valuable insights on how they work in practice and opportunities for replication. In GrowSmarter Open District Heating will be demonstrating two solutions for recovery of excess heat; one solution within the food industry and another within the data center industry.

Together with more than 20 industrial partners smart technologies related to energy, mobility and infrastructure are being rolled out in chosen sites; Stockholm, Barcelona and Köln. The idea is to create a business case to initiate market roll out in the Follower Cities and the rest of Europe.
The idea is to create a ready market for these smart solutions to support growth and the transition to a smart, sustainable Europe.

GrowSmarter kicked off January 2015 and will run until December 2019. This project has received €25 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
